It’s official. Next August, I will be participating in the NYC Triathlon. What did I get myself into? (Note: It is sadly not what I have included in the comic above)
Let me explain my logic. I figured by now I have an idea of what a marathon is like. After three marathons, I get it now. I know what I need to do and what I shouldn’t do, and should be able to focus on improving my times if I remember all my lessons learned. Consequently, I decided to further challenge myself by entering into the lottery to the NYC Tri with one of my roommates. She is an avid biker so she has her own set of goals, and we convinced ourselves it would be a good idea. Fortunately, we both got it! Woot I have a training buddy :) I do think it’s helpful though, I run, she bikes, we swim (kind of? It’s been awhile), so we should be able to push each other during training. More importantly, the race isn’t until August so we definitely have some time.
Some things I learned along the way: there are all types of triathlons: sprint, olympic, half-Ironman, and full Ironman. The difference between each is really the distance of each swim, bike, and run portion. I haven’t quite wrapped my head around the differences in swim and bike, but for the runners the difference is 5K, 10K, half-marathon, full-marathon. For the record, NYC is an olympic triathlon (why can’t I ever start with the smallest race first?)
Now I am just looking up how to train and what’s really needed to get all three components feeling strong. I’ll be reaching out to my fellow bloggers to see what has worked for you all in the past, so please feel free to send some things my way!
Any tips of on your first triathlon or your go to websites?
