It seems so silly sometimes when my friends and I complain that we can’t drink as much as we could in college. I mean really, was drinking heavily and taking shots upon shots necessary? Probably not. I don’t see the issue in drinking less overall: you save money and you avoid hangovers, which basically gives you an entire day to be productive. It doesn’t mean I completely abstain, but a glass of wine with dinner or a beer every now and then won’t kill me.
However, I made a boo boo last weekend. It wasn’t severe, and I have moved on, but considering where I was with my training it probably wasn’t the best idea. I went out with my girlfriend for dinner (who was going through a break-up so of course we needed wine to mask the pain), and then met up with some friends, one of whom was only in town for the weekend. Long story short, my tolerance has diminished over the past year, so after three drinks, I knew I needed to start ordering water. And thank goodness, because I think the water *slightly* saved me the next morning. We didn’t get back home until 2:30 AM, and then I had to wake up at 6 AM so I could leave for a 5K in Brooklyn. Yea, not a smart move.
I had a piece of toast with peanut butter for breakfast along with some coffee and headed out to Prospect Park. The park is absolutely gorgeous and the weather was perfect. However, I didn’t expect the race to be almost entirely uphill. So after the second hill at mile 2, I thought, man I should NOT have had that other beer last night. My watched told me I clocked in at 26:40, which was not a PR and not where I should have been, but, lesson learned. Yes, I will be ordering water at the bar from now on.
How do you handle going out with friends while training? Do you avoid going out at all or have you been able to find a healthy balance?
